abstract = {Plant growth inhibitors (PGIs) in rice (Oryza sativa), or rice allelochemicals, are secondary metabolites that are either exudated by rice plants to cope with natural competitors or produced during the decomposition of rice by-products in the paddy fields. Of these, the major groups of rice PGIs include phenolics, flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, steroids, and fatty acids, which also exhibit potential medicinal and pharmaceutical properties. Recently, the exploitation of rice PGIs has attracted considerable attention from scientists worldwide. The biosynthesis, exudation, and release of PGIs are dependent on environmental conditions, relevant gene expression, and biodiversity among rice varieties. Along with the mechanism clarification, numerous analytical methods have been improved to effectively support the identification and isolation of rice PGIs during the last few decades. This paper provides an overview of rice PGIs and techniques used for determining and extracting those compounds from rice. In particular, the features, advantages, and limitations of conventional and upgraded extraction methods are comprehensively reported and discussed. The conventional extraction methods have been gradually replaced by advanced techniques consisting of pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), and solid-phase extraction (SPE). Meanwhile, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), liquid chromatography (LC), gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and X-ray crystallography are major tools for rice PGI identification and confirmation. With smart agriculture becoming more prevalent, the statistics of rice PGIs and extraction methods will help to provide useful datasets for building an autonomous model for safer weed control. Conceivably, the efficient exploitation of rice PGIs will not only help to increase the yield and economic value of rice but may also pave the way for research directions on the development of smart and sustainable rice farming methods.},

The study aimed to estimate the all-cause mortality rates within 1 year of diagnosis among colorectal cancer patients diagnosed during the pandemic period (2020 and 2021) compared to those diagnosed during the pre-pandemic period (2018 and 2019).
Methods: The day of diagnosis was set as Day 0 and Cox regression models were utilized to estimate crude hazard ratios (HRs) and adjusted HRs, accounting for age, sex, cancer stage, and treatment status. Two sensitivity analyses of overall survival were performed with different cutoffs of the pre-pandemic/pandemic periods and year-to-year comparisons. Subgroup analyses were performed using likelihood ratio tests.
Results: A total of 15,085 colorectal cancer patients were included, with 6499 eligible for follow-up. A median age of included patients was 72 years old, of which 59% were male. The distribution of cancer stages showed little variation between the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. With a median follow-up of 177 days, the number of events was 316/3111 (173 events per 1000 person-years [E/1000PY], 95% confidence interval [CI]: 154-192 E/1000PY) in the pre-pandemic period, and 326/2746 (245 E/1000PY, 95% CI: 220-274 E/1000PY) in the pandemic period (crude HR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.22-1.66; adjusted HR: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.07-1.46). The two sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses consistently supported these findings.
Conclusions: The study revealed an increased colorectal cancer mortality during the pandemic period, suggesting a continuous impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the known and unknown risk factors for colorectal cancer for several years. Further studies are necessary to mitigate the adverse effects on patient outcomes.},

abstract = {As computational techniques advance, the scope of digital twins (DTs) is expanding to encompass entire cities, oceans, or even the Earth. Digital twins of oceans can provide highly comprehensive insights and predictions, thus enabling better-informed decision-making regarding ocean-related activities and management. Here, a numerical model of the Seto Inland Sea (SIS), Japan, was built as a basis to establish a digital twin of the SIS. Spatially varying filtering parameters and grid resolutions were applied to facilitate the robust and accurate simulation of coastal and oceanic processes even under varying extreme conditions. The modeling results were validated using observational datasets from forty-two tidal stations, one mooring system, and thirteen water thermometers. The results represented tidal variations, with NRMSE values below 0.15 and R2 values exceeding 0.87 at all tidal stations. The NRMSE and R2 values for currents were approximately 0.14 and 0.76, respectively. The model reproduced the extreme storm surge event causing a sea level rise of 1.5 m near Osaka City resulting from Typhoon Jebi in 2018. The model was shown to enable analyses of complex circulations and hazards in the SIS by accurately replicating barotropic and baroclinic processes. After additional modules are added, this model will serve as a basis for constructing a digital twin of the SIS.},

abstract = {Malawi's access to electricity remains worrisome (15 %), forcing the government to rely on fossil fuels. Thus, renewable energy resources may be one of the best options. However, several barriers are impeding the development of renewable energy technologies. The results indicated that the top two barriers include economic and political-governmental. Furthermore, the top two sub-barriers include lack of funding and high investment cost. Corruption and political commitment have also shown serious contributions to low uptake. Financial incentives, institutional coordination, and research and knowledge sharing are among the highly recommended solutions. This study could help policymakers incorporate necessary strategies when developing energy-related policies.},

abstract = {The Itsukushima Shrine is located in northern Hiroshima Bay in the Seto Inland Sea (SIS). This structure of great cultural value is preserved as one of the World Heritage Sites in Japan. The shrine was built seaside, 30 cm above the highest tide, to prevent it from submerging. However, from 2011 to 2019, the shrine was submerged four times during September due to internal surges. To study the abnormal tide event on 29 September 2011, a high-resolution numerical ocean circulation model was established using Semi-implicit Cross-scale Hydroscience Integrated System Model (SCHISM). Observed subtidal components of surface elevation in the northern part of the bay decreased due to northerly winds when the typhoon passed east off the bay. After 7–8 days of typhoon passage, the component increased abnormally in the northern part of the bay. Simulation results revealed that a destabilized density stratification by the typhoon winds most likely caused bay-scale internal waves. The internal wave developed after the typhoon passed and was caught from the kinetic energy filtered in the possible internal wave periods. The internal wave propagated southward after the typhoon passage and returned to the northern bay, causing the subtidal component to increase after 7–8 days. Sensitivity tests with various scales of the typhoon were performed, and the test results exhibited a positive relationship between the abnormal tide level and typhoon intensity to some extent. The results can be generally applied to a semi-closed bay or closed water body for internal wave generation and propagation under specific meteorological conditions for coastal protection and disaster prevention.},

abstract = {<jats:p>Microorganisms in our living environment may affect human health. Microbial suppression by air cleaners and disinfecting agents may provide protection from pathogenic materials. However, excessive microbial suppression can negatively affect human health; thus, an appropriate level of microbiome control is beneficial. It is not well understood how physical environmental conditions, such as temperature and relative humidity, and human lifestyles and behaviors affect indoor microorganisms. To understand the relationship between physical environmental conditions and microbial communities in the human living environment, we measured temperature and relative humidity and collected microbial samples in modern and traditional Japanese houses. In this study, bacteria and fungi were the target microorganisms. In both houses, the DNA concentration of microorganisms on floor surfaces was high when the average relative humidity of the room was high. The same tendency was observed for the beam and pillar surfaces in the traditional house. Although more careful consideration is needed for some indoor surfaces, such as storage ceilings and air conditioner outlets, seasonal changes in relative humidity and DNA concentrations of microorganisms on indoor surfaces exhibit some correlation.</jats:p>},
